The Soldotna Airport closed its runway on Thursday. The closure on Thursday was for surveying and geotechnical boring for a project next summer.
The city received a $7 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration which covers 100% of the cost for the project, according to the city Planning and Zoning.
The project includes new asphalt, painting and edge lighting. Soldotna’s municipal airport (SQX) is located on Funny River Road about one mile from the downtown commercial district. It is immediately adjacent to the Kenai River.
The gravel strip will remain open during construction, and an alternate runway will be created on a taxiway parallel to the main runway while that one’s shut down, according to the city.
The City maintenance department administers tie-downs, long term parking, and lease lots at the airport. The maintenance department also regularly plows and clears the runways, driveways, and taxiways during snow events.
