Peninsula Sports Athletes of the Week Recognized

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

Each week throughout the high school sports 2022-23 competitive seasons, KSRM/ESPN selects a Peninsula Sports/Subway Athlete of the Week from the central peninsula’s three public high schools.

For the week ending May 11

Selected for the Kenai Kardinals is soccer player Maddie Malone. The Kardinal goalie recorded shutouts against SoHi (2-0), Houston (5-0) and Grace (4-0).  The 12-0 Kardinal girls have allowed only one goal in their past four games.  Kenai soccer travels to Palmer on Friday and plays Grace at the Anchorage Football Stadium on Saturday.

Leading the pack for the Nikiski Bulldogs is Bulldog goalie Emma Weeks.  Emma has helped the Bulldogs to a pair of victories, a 3-3 tie with Houston and recorded over 30 saves in Tuesday’s game against Kenai.  Nikiski hosts SoHi on Friday and Redington on Saturday.

Representing the Soldotna Stars is soccer scorer Andrew Arthur.  Arthur opened the week with a 5-goal effort against Houston; added a goal in a victory over Grace; helped the Stars down Kenai 2-1 and bounced a shot off the post in a 0-0 tie with Homer.  SoHi travels to Nikiski on Friday for Peninsula Conference soccer.

Congratulations to all Peninsula Sports/Subway Athletes of the Week.  Each selection will receive a Subway Classic Value Meal from one of the area Subway stores.  Certificates are delivered to the schools for distribution.
