The Kenai Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center and the City of Kenai are hosting the Third Annual Kenai Silver Salmon Derby. The derby will kick off its second weekend from September 20 through September 22.
Proceeds from the Kenai Silver Salmon Derby go to support the Kenai Community Foundation’s projects for management and conservation of riverbanks and riparian zones along the Kenai River.
Kenai City Manager Paul Ostrander: “The first weekend of the derby we actually had a very good turn out, but the fishing was really tough. We’re expecting that there is a real possibility the winner is going to come out of this weekend.”
The Derby Entry fee is $10 for one day, or $50 for the entire Derby. Tickets may be purchased at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center office, Three Bears, and other local businesses.
Ostrander: “The largest fish of the derby is not the winner of the derby. What we do is generate a random weight, everyday, and then they win the daily prize. At the end we generate a winning weight that wins the overall prize of close to $1,200.”
The Kenai Silver Salmon Derby is a new kind of fishing tournament that reduces selective fishing practices that lead to catch-and-release injuries which compromise the health of the silver salmon population in the Kenai River.
Here is a list of the winners from the first weekend:
Day 1: Congratulations to Barbara Bosch. She won with a silver weighing 8.30 pounds.
Day 2: Congratulations to Kyle Oldring. Kyle won with a silver weighing 13 pounds 35 ounces.
Day 3: Congratulations to Tomi McMurray. Tomi won with a silver weighing 8.78 pounds.
