The Railbelt Conference for high school hockey opened play for the Soldotna Stars and Homer Mariners with a 4-3 overtime Mariner victory at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex on Friday.
Homer defeated SoHi on an overtime goal off the stick of Tyler Gilliland at 3:33 of the overtime period. The goal capped a Homer scoring run which included four-unanswered goals after the Stars built a 3-0 lead in the first period.
The Stars opened with three goals in the first nine minutes including goals by Gavin Haakenson, Brier Books and Dylan Dahlgren.
Homer’s Ethan Pitzman recorded a three- goal, hat trick with a goal in each period. Pitzman scored late in the first to put the Mariners on the board: 3-1 SoHi.
Pitzman scored a power play goal in the second: 3-2 SoHi.
Pitzman added a power play goal late with 1:23 remaining in regulation for a 3-3 tie.
The game-winner by Gililand came on a 5 on 3 power play. The final three goals for Homer all came with Stars in the box.
SoHi’s goalie Corbin Wirz recorded 40 saves; Homer’s Keegan Strong turned-away just 20 of 23.
Homer hosts the Kenai Kardinals on Saturday at noon at the Kevin Bell Arena.
