Division II soccer opponents from different conferences highlighted the high school soccer weekend with the North Pole Patriots from the Mid Alaska Conference traveling to the peninsula to battle the Soldotna Stars and Kenai Kardinals.
Kenai Soccer vs North Pole
Kenai Girls 2 – North Pole 1
The Kenai girls downed North Pole 2-1 in Saturday’s non-conference pairing. Kenai opened the scoring with an Alyssa Bucho goal midway through the first half. The Kardinals broke a 1-1 tie in the second half on an Olivia Brewer goal for the Kenai victory.
Kenai Boys 4 – North Pole 1
The Kenai boys recorded a 4-1 victory over the Patriots from Fairbanks in non-conference play on Saturday lead by a two-goal effort by Leif Lofquist. Kenai Lofquist netted the game’s first goal on a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Tomas Lecy-Canedo gave Kenai a 2-1 lead and Lofguist’s second goal pushed the score to 3-1 Kenai in the first half. Francisco Garmen Munarriz added a final goal for Kenai. Braedon Pitch allowed one goal in goal for the Kardinal boys.
Soldotna Soccer vs North Pole
SoHi Girls 6 – North Pole 1
The Stars hosted North Pole on Friday and registered six goals against the Patriots. Meijan Leaf recorded a three-goal, hat trick including the game’s first goal in the 11th minute. Jordan Strausbaugh, Ryann Cannava and Katie Delker each added single goals for the Stars. Katie Delker played in goal for SoHi for the first half; Margarida Mendoca defended the net in the second half.
SoHi Boys 7 – North Pole 3
The Star boys outscored the Patriots in non-conference soccer on Friday with Josh Heiber leading the Stars with a four-goal, hat trick. The contest went back-and-forth with North Pole leading 2-1. SoHi tied the game at 2-2 in the second half’s first minute on an Alex Montague penalty shot. The Stars took a 3-2 lead on a Heiber goal and North Pole re-tied the game at 3-3. SoHi scored four, unanswered goals to close the game. Kaleb Swank and Cameron Johnson closed-out the Stars scoring.
