The high school basketball regular season closed on Saturday with conference games on the road for the Kenai Kardinals and non-conference home games for the Soldotna Stars.
Kenai and Nikiski open play at the Southcentral Conference Basketball Championships on Thursday, March 7th; SoHi hosts the Northern Lights Conference Basketball Championships at Soldotna High School beginning March 7th.
Saturday Game Results: Kenai @ Grace Christian School
Kenai Girls 29 – Grace 27
The Kenai girls held Grace Christian without a field goal in the fourth quarter and senior Jaycie Calvert hit a game-winning, three point shot with 2.6 seconds remaining to push the Kardinals past Grace 29-27 at Grace Christian School.
Kenai trailed 25-21 after three quarters and outscored the Grizzlies 8-2 in the final quarter. Calvert lead the Kardinals with 9 points and Brooke Satathite scored 8 points for Kenai.
Kenai Boys 32 – Grace 50
Grace Christian jumped-out to an 8-0 lead in the first 1:30 and lead 28-18 at the half. Grace outscored Kenai 22-14 in the second half. Tyrone McEnerney lead the Kards with 8 points.
Southcentral Conference Standings
The Kenai girls finish Southcentral Conference play with a 7-3 conference record and earn the #2 South seed into the SSC tournament. The Kenai boys, 6-4, earn the #1 South seed for the SSC tournament. The Anchorage Christian School Lions are the top seed in both girls and boys for the North; Nikiski girls hold the top spot in the girls South. Official seeding and brackets should be released on Sunday afternoon.
Soldotna vs Homer: Non-Conference
SoHi Girls 66 – Homer 24
The SoHi girls overpowered Homer on SoHi Senior Day defeating Homer 66-24 in non-conference basketball at SoHi on Saturday.
SoHi lead 36-12 at the half and added 30 points in the second half. Aliann Schmidt lead the Stars with 19 points, Danica Schmidt added 14 and Brittani Blossom scored 14 points.
The SoHi girls stand at 8-0 in the Northern Lights Conference and earn the #1 seed into the Northern Lights Conference Basketball Championships scheduled for Soldotna High School March 7-9. The SoHi girls receive a first-round bye on Thursday and will play the winner of the #4 vs #5 game in next Friday’s semi-final. An official bracket should be available on Sunday.
SoHi Boys 47 – Homer 46
The SoHi boys held-off a late charge by the Homer Mariners to survive with a 47-46 non-conference basketball victory at SoHi. The Stars offense was balanced: 13 points in first quarter, 10 in second, 12 in third and 12 in the fourth quarter. SoHi lead 35-23 into the fourth quarter and the Mariners equaled their total for three quarters with a 23-point fourth quarter to close to within a point. Homer launched the final shoot at the buzzer and the Stars prevailed. Jersey Truesdell scored 18 points and was the only player, for either team, in double-figures.
The SoHi boys will be the #3 seed into the Northern Lights Conference Basketball Championships scheduled for Soldotna High School March 7-9. The SoHi boys receive a first-round bye on Thursday and will play Wasilla in next Friday’s semi-final. An official bracket should be available on Sunday.
