Friday Night Football lost-out to Friday smoke and poor air quality with the Anchorage School District and the Mat-Su School District postponing all football contests (Aug 23) until a possible reschedule on Saturday, August 24th. The Anchorage and Mat-Su districts postponements follow the Kenai Peninsula’s cancellations which were issued on Wednesday.
All Friday and Saturday football contests have contingency plans for Saturday, if the districts approve play based on air quality. Air quality will be tested at 8 a.m. and again at noon to determine Saturday’s game status.
Anchorage School District declaration on Friday, August 23.
“Due to the air quality conditions, all after-school outdoor practices and competitions scheduled for today have been cancelled. If practices can be held indoors, those practices may continue as scheduled.
Outdoor athletic competitions scheduled today have been moved to Saturday, August 24. If your game was to take place outside of Anchorage, it will go on as planned. Parents/guardians will receive an update from their child’s athletic coach on Saturday.
In looking ahead to Saturday, Aug. 24 competitions, we will monitor air quality conditions and share an update if the conditions require cancellation.”
