The ASAA 1A and 2A State Basketball Champions closed play on Saturday with champions crowned in both the girls and boys divisions at the Alaska Airlines Center at UAA.
1A Girls Basketball
The King Cove girls, seeded #1 into the girls bracket, completed an undefeated tournament run with a 72-34 victory over Tri-Valley in the girls championship game.
1A Boys Basketball
The King Cove boys completed an undefeated season with a 1A state championship game victory over Nunamuit 59-54.
2A Girls Basketball
The Tikigaq (Pt. Hope) girls entered the 1A girls tournament as the #1 seed and defeated all challengers on their way to the 2019 2A girls title.
Tikigaq defeated Nenana in the girls championship game on Saturday 49-39 to defend its 2018 state championship.
2A Boys Basketball
The Tikigaq boys held-off Metlakatla 53-47 in the boys championship game Saturday, building a 14- point lead and fighting off a late charge by the Chiefs.
Metlakatla knocked-off #1 seed Unalaska in Friday’s semi-final; Tikigaq (Pt. Hope) downed #2 seed Glennallen 76-60 in its semi-final on Friday.
1A-2A Tournament Note
For the first time in Alaska high school basketball history, Two schools each sweep the team championships on the same day in two divisions. The King Cove girls and boys win the 1A championships and the Tikigaq girls and boys win the 2A championships.
3A & 4A State Basketball Tournament
The 3A and 4A state basketball championships open play on Thursday, March 22 and run through Championship Saturday, March 24.
